This one is a prototype Triumph 2500 fitted with the 2.6l OHC Rover/Triumph inline 6. It's a shame it never made production as I think it looks rather good :) bit of a Triumph photodump below :)

Weren't these a bit of a disaster in the SD1?

They didn't gather themselves a stunning reputation no. They had issues with oil flow into the head which could have been solved if it weren't for the usual BL mess.
They also had the output of the 2.6l hamstrung by using the cam from the 2.3l as testbed engines produced power too close to that of the carbed 3.5l V8. Wouldn't have been a problem in the top of the range Triumph.
Even with the soft camshaft, it still made comparable power to other mid-displacement 6s of the time: 136bhp for the Rover, 127bhp for the Benz M123, 131bhp for the PRV, 135bhp for the Cologne V6. In fact, the only one to beat it power-wise was the 148bhp BMW M30B25. If it had a better cam, it might have been a real BMW-beater (back when that wasn't the accolade that it is today of course).
I've still got a bit of a plan to rebuild one with a ported head, hot cam and fuel injection and stick it in a TR6. I reckon it would be a pretty good car :)
